From a tourist’s perspective, Ghana’s bounty lies in the variety of sites and experiences that await a visitor there, be they educational, entertaining or awe-inspiring.

A large and thriving city, Ghana’s capital, Accra, boasts many impressive sites and structures, such as the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Mausoleum and the Independence Arch. For those who enjoy good bargain bantering, there is the outdoor Centre for National Culture, where you must come equipped with a keen eye, light clothing, some awareness of local prices, and most importantly, a clear idea of what you need – for if you don’t, you will leave with more clothing, souvenirs and artifacts than you can carry.

For the art lover, The Loom gallery showcases many choice pieces by artists of vastly differing styles using various – and sometimes surprising – media. The region’s beautiful beaches, such as White Sands and Labadi, are not to be missed. The Ghanaian Village Restaurant at La Palm Beach Resort features a seaside environment that breathtakingly complements its indigenous fare, which is prepared and presented with gourmet flair. The lunch destination of choice for business people in the greater Accra region is by far the Novotel, conveniently located near the city’s center. The hotel is part of the worldwide French Accor chain and is year-round host to business and leisure travelers from all over the world.

The capital of the Asante region, Kumasi, is a city worth experiencing, as it offers a sharp contrast to Accra’s bustling metropolis feel – let alone relief from Kumasi’s thorny traffic situation. It is also home to the King of Asante’s royal palace. There are craft villages (Bonwire, Awhiaa and Ntonso) on the outskirts of the city, where visitors can watch men and women diligently at work on their crafts. A visit to Kumasi should be capped with a stay – if only for one night – at the Four Villages Inn, a small, four-bedroom bed-and-breakfast, where the breathtaking interior, peaceful natural environment and superb service come together to create a “life is good” experience.

EJISU YAA ASANTEWAA

Her fight against British colonialists is a story is woven throughout the history of Ghana. A story from Ghana , A History for Primary Schools, E.A. Addy; In the evening the chiefs held a secret meeting at Kumasi. Yaa Asantewaa the Queen Mother of Ejisu, was at the meeting. The chiefs were discussing how they should make war on the white men and force them to bring back the Asantehene. Yaa Asantewaa saw that some of the chiefs were afraid. Some said that there should be no war. They should rather go to beg the Governor to bring back the Asantehene King(Nana) Prempeh.

Then suddenly Yaa Asantewaa stood up and spoke. This was what she said: “Now I have seen that some of you fear to go forward to fight for our king. If it were in the brave days of, the days of Osei Tutu, Okomfo Anokye, and Opoku Ware, chiefs would not sit down to see thier king taken away without firing a shot. No white man could have dared to speak to chief of the Ashanti in the way the Governor spoke to you chiefs this morning. Is it true that the bravery of the Ashanti is no more? I cannot believe it. It cannot be! I must say this: if you the men of Ashanti will not go forward, then we will. We the women will. I shall call upon my fellow women.

We will fight the white men. We will fight till the last of us falls in the battlefields.”

This speech stirred up the men who took an other to fight the white men until they released the Asantehene. For months the Ashantis led by Yaa Asantewaa fought very bravely and kept the white men in the fort. Yet British reinforcements totaling 1,400 soldiers arrived at Kumasi. Yaa Asantewa and other leaders were capturedand sent into exile. Yaa Asantewaa’s war was the last of the major war in Africa led by a women.
